In the space of just three years, Mats van Biljouw’s life has been transformed. What began as making music in a bedroom in Horst, Limburg, has grown into an international career under the name KLOFAMA. At 23, he is performing for thousands of people, travelling across countries and emerging as one of the defining artists of a new hardtechno generation.
But rapid success does not only change what the world sees. It also changes the person living through it.
That transformation is at the centre of I AM: KLOFAMA, a short documentary by production company CULT. Directed by Sten Hoeijmakers of CULT. Productions, the film follows Mats during a year in which his career reaches an unprecedented level of momentum.
The documentary captures the intensity of life as an international DJ: early flights, unfamiliar hotel rooms, backstage preparations and performances on major stages. It follows KLOFAMA through a demanding schedule in which every week brings a new destination, a new crowd and new expectations.
At the same time, the film returns to Horst, the place where Mats’ story began. Between international performances, he comes home to his family, friends and familiar surroundings. These scenes offer a glimpse of the person behind the artist name and reveal the distance between his public life and his private identity.

Two lives, one person
On stage, KLOFAMA is confident, intense and fully immersed in the energy of the crowd. His performances place him at the centre of a rapidly expanding hardtechno movement, where sound, speed and physical experience come together.
At home, the atmosphere is entirely different. Mats is surrounded by people who knew him before the attention, the bookings and the growing audience. In Horst, he is not only a performer. He is someone’s son, someone’s friend and a young man trying to make sense of a life that has changed faster than expected.
That contrast forms the emotional core of I AM: KLOFAMA. The documentary asks what happens when a public identity begins to grow beyond the person who created it.
How do you stay true to yourself when thousands of people recognise a version of you that exists primarily on stage? How do you deal with the pressure of maintaining success while still trying to develop as a person? And what does it mean to be internationally known while continuing to return to the same home, family and hometown?
The film does not offer simple answers. Instead, it observes Mats as he moves between these worlds, revealing how closely ambition and vulnerability can exist alongside one another.
The moments between performances
The most revealing moments in the documentary take place away from the stage. At the kitchen table, during drives through Horst and in conversations with longtime friends, the pace of Mats’ life briefly slows down.
These everyday situations create space for a side of him that audiences rarely see. Feelings of doubt, loneliness, exhaustion and relief become visible beneath the excitement of success. The film shows that the life of a successful DJ is not made up solely of packed venues and euphoric crowds, but also of waiting, travelling, missing home and constantly adjusting to new demands.
In these moments, the KLOFAMA persona becomes less dominant. What remains is Mats himself: reflective, ambitious and aware that his career is developing at a speed that can be difficult to absorb.

A new path to global recognition
Mats’ story reflects the changing way artists break through in the digital age. Social media and online platforms have made it possible for producers to build international audiences without first spending years establishing themselves through a traditional local network.
A distinctive sound can now travel across borders almost instantly. For a new generation of artists, the path from bedroom production to international stage is shorter, faster and more directly connected to audiences.
KLOFAMA is a clear example of that shift. In only a few years, Mats has progressed from sharing tracks with friends to performing at major hardtechno and electronic music platforms including Blackworks, Verknipt, Rotterdam Rave and Teletech. He has also appeared at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
His growth is further reflected in the success of his all-night-long shows. Over the past two years, multiple editions in the Netherlands and abroad have sold out, demonstrating his ability to attract large audiences independently and internationally.

A portrait of success in real time
What makes I AM: KLOFAMA distinctive is that it documents this development while it is still happening. Mats is not looking back on a completed career from a distance. He is living through the breakthrough in real time, navigating the opportunities and uncertainties as they unfold.
The result is a portrait of a young artist caught between acceleration and reflection. KLOFAMA’s career is moving forward at full speed, while Mats continues to search for balance, stability and a sense of self.
The documentary is therefore about more than hardtechno or the rise of a DJ. It is about the human experience behind sudden recognition—and the challenge of remaining grounded when the world begins to move with you.
I AM: KLOFAMA is currently in production and is expected to premiere in mid-2027.
